Shane,
Interesting problem. Why not just remove the element and vacuum out the
calcium deposits. I use an Atlantic Marine heater and the elements have not
lasted very long; however, this has given me a chance to remove the calcium
build up in the hot water heater. If I ever get out of here and start
cruising then I will use the water maker exclusively to fill the water tanks
and that will be the end of calcium problems. The last time I replaced the
element I installed a 3-way valve so I can dump the hot water in a hurry so
replacing the element is relatively easy as the water can be dumped to the
bilge simply by opening the valve. I have not answered your question but
understand the problem. The real problem is eliminating calcium build up in
the pipes too. I load dock water that has a high mineral content and no
amount of filtering will remove the dissolved minerals.

Subject: [baba] Hot Water Tank Filter
All:
I have a fairly old but effective hot water heater that apparently has some
calcification inside the tank -- I know this because I've had problems with
my hot water tap in the galley clogging up. This is temporarily fixed by
back-flushing the hot water system from galley to the heater, but I needed a
permanant solution so I put in a small Jabsco metal-screen water filter on
the heater tank outlet. While installing it I noticed the filter specified
"suction side only" which obviously is impossible to do in the application I
wanted it for. So, I tried it anyway and blew out 2 filters in 3 weeks
before giving up.
Does anyone know of a small filter that can be used on the pressure side in
a hot water application? I can't fit anything too large there, and I don't
need a lot of filtration, just enough to keep flakes of stuff from clogging
the taps.
Thanks,
Shane Wilson
