We are fans of Crystal varnish from Detco. It builds well, is very long
lasting, and takes quite a bit of abuse.

Alan is right. One of the really big advantages of varnish is that it's
easily removable. Our eyebrow was never finished properly by the POs.
We've done several repairs, but the only real solution was to strip and
start over. After an embarrassing amount of fear and trepidation, we
bought a heat gun (el cheapo from ACE) and I went at it. It didn't wreck
the gelcoat!! It didn't wreck the teak!! I didn't burn my fingers off!!
The varnish comes off in big amber "corn flakes" and leaves a surface
that's pretty much ready for sanding. (One of our local dock gurus
suggested bleaching before sanding, but I'm not sure about that.)

Everybody talks about their annual "scuff and coat" with the 2 part
finishes. There's really not that much more to do with properly applied
varnish. (Maybe two coats instead of one.) I can see how varnish might
not do well in the tropics. If (when) we go there, we'll probably do a
good solid varnish job and then paint over that. Then when (if) we come
back, we'll bring out the heat gun, strip the whole thing off, and bring
her back to bright.

That's the plan anyway. ;-)
