Not knowing, past whatever I saw in the BVI (hazed by the consumption of
painkillers...), jack about the Alpha wiring, I can't comment on the
particulars. However, it seems it can be done and that the Roberstson
controller can be coerced into working with all manner of drives.
Sometimes just knowing something has been done or can be done is the
catalyst needed for a project. [grin]

Gotit. This is, of course, all very Not Good. I recently treated a
friend to a near vein-bulging rant about marine consultants (the guys
from out of town who charge you to tell you the time of day with your
own watch). Your experience at the hands of Those Who Should Know
Better is another facet of that rant. Cheer up. At least you have the
sense to know something's wrong and know of ways to fix it.

FWIW, we have a Type 2 linear drive (electric, not hydraulic). As I
mentioned earlier, there was a problem with the brushes but otherwise
it's worked well. The idea of the hydraulic drive was kicked around but
in our case I think we made the right call. At any rate, we're pleased
with the results. The rudder position sensor strikes me as a little
flimsy and you should include some time/money to see it's well protected
from flying stuff that could be in the area (e.g., fenders,
fenderboards). We also found the fluxgate took a few tries to get it in
the right place. We started near (too close, it turned out) to the
galley and wound up in a locker outboard, to port, of the mast.
