I'm just home for a few hours and I've been quickly doing a cursory reading
of the 250+ postings since we left in late June, and I saw a long thread on
refrigeration, and specifically vacuum panels, either inside the fridge or
in the engine compartment. Last winter I installed two custom panels from
Glacier Bay (R-50, 1") in the engine compartment so the complete interface
between fridge and engine compartment has this barrier. The freezer is
immediately on the other side of the "wall". I can remove the panels should
I ever need temporary additional space to work on the engine. In addition
on each side of the panels there is 663 noise insulation barrier (from
Ballard Insulation).

Last season the fridge would run continuously, for several hours, after the
engine was shut down. Now, with the addition of the vacuum panels, you'd
never know the engine had been running based on the fridge duty cycle. I
have concluded they were one of the best things I ever did for the fridge.
It was much easier to install them in the engine compartment than inside the
icebox...and if I had put them in the icebox I would have lost fridge
storage space.

I paid a little extra to have Glacier Bay have the engine side of the panels
be fiberglass instead of the usual material they use, to give more
protection to them.
