RE: [baba] Bowsprit Lifted

This is an update to my post a few weeks ago about a lifted bow-sprit.

It seems that the bolt at the stem was loose (I think it was loosened when
someone working on my boat was thinking of replacing it - and he forgot to
fasten it back down).

And, the bobstay was too loose. When tuned this past winter when the mast
was unstepped, I do not think the backstay was cranked back very much, so,
it simply was lifting up the bowsrpit.

So, 5200 was jammed in under the bowsprit in the gap, and the bolt
tightened (needed a 150 pounder for that).

Then the bob stay was tightened down ( and the whisker stays tightened).

When the backstay was then tightened, the bowsprit end started to come up
again and you could even see a slight bend in the bowsprit.

So, we tightened up on the bobstay a little bit more until the bowsprit was
even

Now, it all looks secure - but it will be important to monitor the bobstay
when cranking down on the backstay adjuster.

This means that when tuning the rig and cranking down hard on the backstay,
the bobstay and the bowsprit should be monitored.

As far as the utility of the bolt, there are divided minds. However,
because the bowsprit will bend under compression, it seems to me that one
thing the bolt does is prevent the bending and perhaps maintain the
strength of the bowspirt by keep it from bowing. But, that is just a theory.

Thanks for the help of those on the list.

Alan

I am going to seal up the openings in the bowsprit with expoxy which has uv
protection. I still do not like a slippery varnished bowsprit.
