I have a couple of comments about anchors that I just have to toss
overboard:
 
1. Restraints rigged to prevent sailing about on anchor are fine except in
crowded anchorages where all the boats have to dance to the same tune (La
Paz use to be an exception-where nothing helped). In one, Majorca I believe,
all the boats used the exact same length of rode (except one) stubborn
rascal in the middle, with three times the needed scope, who created all
sorts of problems, then blamed everyone else.

2. In Florida and Bahamas where hard sand/coral predominates, we often used
two anchors, a plow and fluke (style). The latter usually succeeds and the
former doing its name by plowing furrows.

3. In deep water and mud, the deep-set fluke style were unmatchable. We
found bad anchorages situations in Panama Canal and in Singapore where we
used the fluke and were the only boat holding position-which is another
problem, being attacked by errant, semi-anchored boats.


4. We have used other popular and less expensive anchors with mixed success.
However, after thousands of anchorings we've settled on the CQR forged steel
hinged-plow as a primary and a Fortress aluminum fluke for a secondary-or
primary where called for by bottom conditions-for restful nights. These are
more expensive, but we have never had a failure or a disastrous dragging (or
even an alarming one, as I can recall).

I would be interested in the findings of Bill and Gary (Amadon Light). Now,
those two are anchoring connoisseurs!
