so, here's how THAT conversation would go...
sailor "Run that dock line through the port hawse hole"
non-sailor "The what through the what/where?"
sailor "that line...the rope there through the port hawse hole"
non-sailor (picking up neighbor's dock line) "this string?"
sailor "no, the one next to it...on our side"
non-sailor (picking up correct line) "okay, where did you want it?"
sailor "through the hawse hole"
non-sailor (looking around)
sailor (pointing) "that hole there through the bulwark"
non-sailor (following line from finger across marina)
sailor (walking up and touching the 'hawse hole') "Here"
non-sailor "oh, you mean put the line through this hole thingy and wrap it around the pointy thingy"
sailor "uhhh...yeah"
chock (as defined by the 'Sailing Pocket Dictionary' by Henry Beard and Roy McKie) "a condition experienced by Spanish sailors when startled"
hopefully...'nuff said.
