I agree, this is less than perfect in an emergency, but all I do is take up the chain on the windlass until the plate is just below the platform. Then I release one side, walk it in front of the forestay and at the same time releasing the snubber from the chain, and then drop it on the opposite deck. I have a set of mesh bags that attach to the lifelines next to the upper and lower stays that I keep all this loose gear in while cruising (snubber, wash down hose, line for parrafin anchor light, leadline, etc).

I've thought about that in place of the chain hook. What do you do to
release it in a hurry if, for example, the wind comes up and you need to
veer out more scope? Good point about letting out enough rode to take
the load off the windlass!
