Re yamahas -

We use Yamaha's down here on the ship - 40's, 50's and 9.9s. They are
fantastic motors. I have also personally owned a yamaha 50 two stroke, and
it was a nice motor. In the antarctic, our motors are mounted on 15 foot
zodiacs and we regularly do beach landings in moderate surf for camp
put-ins. The motors often bottom out and hit rocks in the process and go
through ice on a regular basis. Under this abuse and sometimes spotty
maintenance, they never miss a beat. We use both two and four strokes. My
only misgiving on the yamahas is that we didn't buy them with electric
start, and the women that sometimes have to start them down here can have
quite a time of it (40 HP). I wouldn't hesitate to buy one today. I've
not used hondas, but they appear to be good motors and I have not heard
anything bad about them other than price.

A few years ago I did some work on a friends 3.5 merc. All I can say is
that the thing appeared to be made out of smelted beer cans, and I wouldn't
even consider one today. We used to use 50hp merc two strokes on the ship,
and have sent them on their way in favor of the yamahas.

And no - I don't work or have any financial interest in yamaha ;-)...
