Our rigger would not agree. Between the fuzzing of the cover and the
effects of salt on the core, there's a noticeable increase in size. I
don't know the actual current size. We plan on changing to a size more
fitting for the winch.

I guess I'm not explaining this very well. We have quite a bit of
experience with the dynamics of tacking. Every time we took a class or
changed charter companies we had to demonstrate that we knew all of
this. The problem is that the wind will not pull THIS sail across the
foredeck. This is a large (140%?), heavy, tired sail, with a sunbrella
strip that drapes over the shrouds and lays there if we try to let the
wind do the work. It must be pulled across with the sheet. Hence the
problem with the knots. That's probably hard to picture for someone used
to sailing with a better headsail (and probably with more wind), but
this is the reality of what we have to deal with at this time. Other
expenses will probably keep us from getting more new sails this year.
This one is still serviceable if we put up with its issues, and the Baba
30 wasn't made for short tacking up the harbor anyway. ;-)

We do have the ABI inner forestay quick release. You're right, it's an
absolute wonder (and a beautiful piece of hardware). We're still
interested in ways of stowing the inner stay when it's not attached.

Anyway, I really appreciate all the info people have given on the
subject of knots. We have a lot to think about.
