There are two ways to tie the bowline on. One way is far more likely to
catch than if you flip it over and tie it with the loop the other way, ie,
"upside-down". Our sheet bowlines rarely catch if tied this way. Steve,

Our genoa sheets are currently attached with bowlines. We've tied them as
small as possible, but they catch on the shrouds with every tack.
There are plenty of other things for the sheets to catch on without this! We
were wondering about alternatives. One thought was to have a single really
long line and attach it to the clew with a lanyard hitch in the middle of
the line. Can anyone think of a reason why this would be a bad idea?
