Me too, Richard. And the frustrating bottom line is that guess who paid for
those surveys & charts to be made in the first place?
However, it's right in step with the current attempt to stop NOAA from
making weather forecasts, and instead make us pay twice for them. Just do a
goggle on "santorum weather". All boaters should be up in arms over this
latest attempt to gouge us even further.
Excellent article by Nigel Calder. Everyone who uses e-charts should read
it.

Subject: RE: [baba] Electronic Charting Software
I'm trying to get away from being tied in to paying reoccurring fees to use
electronic charting. It's the reason I left Nobeltec and the reason I'm now
leaving "The Capn". If all electronic charts go the way of expiring charts,
(Time Bomb encryption) and reoccurring fees find their way into all these
charting software companies I will go back to paper, pencil and dividers.
You may want to read a very good article in Ocean Navigator magazine,
May/June issue page 42 by Nigel Calder. This article put the charting
software business in perspective.
